CNJ steam power was generally painted black with white lettering. Originally, the road number was painted on the side of the cab in small numbers, and on the side of the tender in large numbers. Above the road number was "C.R.R. of N.J.". Later, the road number was removed from the tender, and the "C.R.R. of N.J." was enlarged. When the "Statue of Liberty" logo was introduced in 1945, it appeared on the side of the tender, replacing the "C.R.R. of N.J.".

The exception to the black paint on steam power was the G3s and G4s classes of Pacifics. Both arrived in Nile Green paint. 3 were soon repainted Royal and Packard Blue for use on the Blue Comet train. In 1928 the G3s, and in 1930 the G4s also received a red and white oval logo on the tenders. The logos were gone by 1933, and by 1937, all of the locomotives were repainted to black.
